Summary
In 2010, the Joint Collaborative Team on Video Coding (JCT-VC, a collaboration between ISO/IEC MPEG and ITU-T VCEG) embarked on a standardization project targeting the next generation of video compression. An impressive joint effort of companies, universities, and research institutes has led to the High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) specification, which is now nearing completion. When compared to H.264/AVC, a bit rate reduction of about 50% is achieved at the same subjective quality. In this talk, an overview will be given of the new standard, along with its main features and improvements, applications, and possible research directions. Additionally, attention will be given to the scalable and 3D extensions of HEVC, which are currently being investigated.
Jan De Cock

Jan De Cock obtained the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering from Ghent University, Belgium, in 2004 and 2009, respectively. Since 2004 he has been working at Multimedia Lab, Ghent University, and the Interdisciplinary Institute for Broadband Technology (IBBT). In 2010, he obtained a postdoctoral research fellowship from the Flemish Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology (IWT) and in 2012, a research fellowship from the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). His research interests include high-efficiency video coding and transcoding, scalable video coding, and multimedia applications.
